LEAD DETECTION

Lead analyser by X-ray fluorescence

Lead cannot be seen. It is read — through the layers of paint, without scraping and without sampling. A portable instrument answers against the wall, where a sample calls for a laboratory and a wait.

Where lead turns up

Six situations that bring an instrument on site.

Old paint and repaints

The commonest case: coats laid before the ban, covered since, and brought back out by sanding.

Renovation and demolition

Before opening a site, knowing what the dust will carry — and what will have to be contained.

Pipework and solder

Pipes, solder joints, fittings: lead passes into water that changes neither taste nor appearance.

Dust and soils

After works or a fire, lead settles far from its source and stays in the dust.

Exposure and blood lead

When exposure is found in a person, the source has to be traced back in their surroundings.

Objects, toys and ceramics

Glazes, decoration, old tableware: lead has left neither collections nor second-hand stalls.

A dedicated instrument, built for lead in buildings

Measuring lead in building fabric calls for a source matched to that element and a geometry that holds the instrument flat against the wall. That is what separates a lead analyser from a handheld alloy spectrometer — and what decides the choice.

What makes a measurement defensible

An instrument alone is not enough: three things decide what the report is worth.

Calibration

Checked against a certified standard at the start and at the end of the campaign, and recorded. Without that double check, the whole series becomes contestable.

The sampling plan

Where to measure, how many points, on which diagnostic units: coverage comes from the plan, not from the number of readings.

The operator

An X-ray instrument is handled under authorisation, with monitored dosimetry and current training. We train the teams who receive one.
