Before a renovation, demolition or refurbishment, you need to know what the materials in place contain. The substances to look for first:
- lead in paints and coatings;

Lead in paint. Isotope-source XRF analysers detect and quantify the Pb-L and Pb-K lines; X-ray tube instruments detect the Pb-L lines. Measurements are taken on site, without sampling, in a few seconds per point.
After removal: the Swiss Waste Ordinance. For excavated material, removed floor coverings and construction waste, the Swiss Waste Ordinance (VVEA/OLED) sets limit values for nine elements: antimony, arsenic, lead, cadmium, chromium, copper, nickel, mercury and zinc. Portable XRF reads all nine on site: enough to sort batches and keep the laboratory for the decisive cases.
